A new puppy at home: the first months at a glance

Bringing a puppy home is exciting, but there's a lot to take in. This overview tells you what to arrange in the first months, so your puppy grows up healthy and confident.
First week: see the vet
Book an introductory vet visit in the first week, even if your puppy seems healthy. The vet does a general check, looks at the vaccination record or passport to see which vaccinations have been given, and plans the next ones. Bring all the paperwork from the breeder or rescue.
Vaccinations
Puppies usually get a course of vaccinations, often starting at around 6 to 9 weeks, followed by one or two more a few weeks apart. The exact schedule depends on your vet and the risks in your area. Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, avoid walking where lots of unknown dogs go. Playing with healthy, vaccinated dogs you know is usually fine.
Microchip and registration
In the Netherlands and the UK, microchipping dogs is a legal requirement, and the chip must be registered on a database. The breeder usually arranges this, but after you buy your puppy, transfer the registration to your name and check your details are correct. Update them if you move or change your phone number.
Worming and fleas
Puppies are often born with worms, so they are wormed regularly in their first months. Ask your vet for the right schedule and a suitable flea and tick treatment for your puppy's age and weight.
Socialisation: the most important weeks
Until around 14 to 16 weeks, a puppy is most open to new experiences. In that time, let your puppy calmly meet different people, sounds, surfaces, the car, traffic and other animals. Keep it short and positive, and reward calm behaviour. A puppy class is a good way to practise this together.
Getting used to handling
Touch your puppy's paws, ears, tail and mouth briefly every day and reward with a treat. That makes nail clipping, brushing and vet check-ups much easier later on. A first short puppy groom, often between 4 and 6 months, helps your puppy get used to the grooming table, dryer and clippers.
