Does a cat need a groomer?

Cats are known for keeping themselves clean, and most short-haired cats need little help. Still, there are plenty of cats for whom a groomer, or at least regular brushing, makes a real difference.

Which cats need help?

• Long-haired cats, such as the Persian, Maine Coon, Ragdoll and Norwegian Forest Cat. Their coat tangles quickly, especially behind the ears, under the armpits and on the back legs.
• Older cats. Stiff joints mean they can't reach everywhere any more, so the coat on the back and hindquarters starts to mat.
• Overweight cats, who can't properly reach their back and rear.
• Cats that bring up a lot of hairballs. Regular brushing removes loose hair before it is swallowed.

What a groomer does for your cat

A cat groomer brushes and detangles the coat, trims the nails and cleans the eyes and ears. If the coat is badly matted, it's often clipped short, sometimes in a so-called lion cut. That looks drastic, but it grows back and is far more comfortable for the cat than mats pulling on the skin. Bathing a cat is rarely needed, except for a very dirty or greasy coat or on a vet's advice.

Brushing at home

Brush long-haired cats ideally every day, short-haired cats once a week. Use a metal comb with fine and coarse teeth and a soft brush. Start briefly, in places your cat enjoys, such as the cheeks and back, and build up slowly. Don't force a cat that resists: try again later.

Nails

Outdoor cats usually wear their nails down themselves. Indoor and older cats often need help: overgrown nails can grow into the paw pad. A scratching post helps, but check the nails every few weeks.

Choosing a cat-friendly groomer

Cats find a new place, strange smells and barking dogs stressful. Choose a groomer with experience handling cats, ideally with a quiet room or separate times for cats.
