Preparing your pet for a stay at a boarding place

A first stay at a boarding place takes some getting used to for most pets. Good preparation makes it much easier for your dog or cat, and means you can leave with peace of mind.

A few weeks before

  • Check the vaccination record and ask the boarding place which vaccinations they need. Kennel cough often has to be given a few weeks before the stay.
  • Treat your pet for fleas, ticks and worms.
  • Book a trial night or a day of daycare so the place and the staff become familiar.

What to pack

  • Their usual food, portioned per day. A sudden change of food can upset the stomach.
  • A blanket or cushion that smells of home.
  • A favourite toy.
  • Any medication with clear instructions, plus the vaccination record.
  • Your contact details and your own vet's details.

On the day

Give your dog a good walk before drop-off so they've burned off some energy. Keep the goodbye short and calm. A long, emotional goodbye often makes pets more unsettled. Trust the staff to know how to help a new guest settle in.

During the stay

It's normal for a pet to eat a little less or be quieter on the first day. Many boarding places send a message or photo. Agree beforehand how and when you'll get updates, so you don't spend your holiday checking your phone.

Back home

After coming home, your pet will often be tired and sleep a lot. Don't give a big meal all at once on the first day, especially if your dog is very excited. After a day or two, things are usually back to normal.
