Choosing a boarding place: what to look for

Going away and can't take your pet? A good boarding place lets you actually relax while you're gone. But boarding places vary a lot. These questions will quickly show you whether one is right for your dog or cat.
Visit first
A good boarding place is happy for you to look around before you book. Check that it's clean and doesn't smell strongly, that the pens or rooms are big enough and that there's outdoor space. Watch how the staff handle the animals too: calm and attentive is a good sign.
Questions to ask
- How many animals stay at the same time, and how many staff are there?
- How often do dogs go outside or for walks, and do they play together or separately?
- Do cats get their own space, away from the sight and sound of dogs?
- Can I bring my own food, bed or blanket?
- What happens if my pet becomes ill? Do you work with a regular vet?
- Can you give medication, and how do you keep track of it?
- Will I get an update or photo while I am away?
Which vaccinations are needed?
Almost every boarding place asks for up-to-date vaccination records. For dogs, most also require a kennel cough vaccination, often given a few weeks before the stay. Check this well in advance so you have time to book a vet appointment.
Try a trial night
Is it the first time? Book a trial night or a day of daycare a few weeks before you leave. Your pet gets to know the place and the staff, and you can see how they react.
Book early
Good boarding places fill up fast during school holidays and around Christmas. Book well ahead, especially if you are going away for a longer time.
